In a significant move to overhaul the grievance redressal ecosystem within the financial sector, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) organized the Third Annual Conference of Internal Ombudsmen (IO) in Mumbai. The apex bank’s convention brought together Internal Ombudsmen from a wide spectrum of regulated entities, including commercial banks, Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs), and Credit Information Companies (CICs), alongside Managing Directors, Chief Executive Officers, Principal Nodal Officers, and senior central bank executives.

Root Cause Analysis Mandated for Recurring Customer Grievances Delivering the keynote address, Shri Swaminathan J., Deputy Governor of the RBI, exhorted the Internal Ombudsmen to provide meaningful, fair, and objective resolutions to customer disputes. The Deputy Governor issued a strong directive to the IOs to proactively identify recurring operational issues, undertake rigorous root cause analysis, and implement institutional remedial measures. He emphasized that an optimized and robust internal ombudsman mechanism should naturally mitigate the need for customers to escalate complaints to external regulatory platforms.

Boards Urged to Leverage Internal Insights for Structural Reforms The Deputy Governor called upon the Boards and senior management of financial firms to systematically empower their respective internal ombudsmen. He stated that corporate leadership must leverage the strategic insights provided by the IO framework to strengthen internal consumer protection policies and diagnostic frameworks. The academic and operational sessions focused entirely on aligning institutional performance with emerging regulatory expectations and delivering faster, higher-quality conflict resolutions.

Interactive Open-House Session Charts Future Roadmap The high-level conference successfully concluded with a strategic open-house interaction led by Smt. Sonali Sen Gupta, Executive Director of the RBI. The session provided a cooperative forum for participants to exchange operational views and evaluate metrics to optimize the execution capabilities of the IO framework. The consensus of the conclave highlighted that systemic enhancements and preventive administrative measures remain vital to fostering long-term stability and absolute consumer confidence across India’s financial architecture.
