Lucknow: The Samajwadi Party (SP) organised a large-scale protest in Lucknow in support of students demonstrating over the NEET issue and to oppose the reported detention of party MPs, including Dimple Yadav, during a protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.
According to the party, leaders and workers gathered near Civil Hospital before marching towards Hazratganj Crossing with party flags and banners. Demonstrators demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and expressed solidarity with students raising concerns over the examination issue.
At Hazratganj, party workers held a sit-in protest and raised slogans against the Central Government. The Samajwadi Party alleged that police intervened during the demonstration, leading to pushing and scuffling with protesters before several leaders and workers were taken into custody and shifted to Eco Garden. The party described the action as an attempt to suppress democratic dissent. An official police response on these allegations was not immediately available.
The protest continued at Eco Garden, where SP leaders reiterated their demand for accountability and called for greater transparency and fairness in addressing issues concerning students.
Among those participating in the protest were former Cabinet Minister and MLA Ravidas Mehrotra, MLA Arman Khan, Lucknow Metropolitan President Fakhir Siddiqui, District President Jai Singh Jayant, former Women’s Wing National President Juhi Singh, former MLA Ambrish Pushkar, Pooja Shukla, and several senior office-bearers and party workers.
Party leaders stated that student-related concerns deserve a constructive and democratic response and urged the government to engage through dialogue rather than confrontation. They also stressed the importance of safeguarding the democratic right to peaceful protest.
