Demand for Restoring Kanshi Ram Nagar and Other Original District Names Rekindles Political Debate

Uttar Pradesh’s political landscape witnessed a fresh twist after the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) publicly welcomed the state government’s decision to restore the name Sant Ravidas Nagar, while simultaneously launching a scathing attack on the Samajwadi Party (SP) for allegedly erasing the legacy of Dalit and OBC icons during its tenure.
In an official statement, the BSP expressed gratitude to the BJP-led state government for reinstating the district’s original name, claiming that the decision corrected what it described as a politically motivated change made by the previous SP government. According to the party, the renaming reflects respect for social reformers and the ideals of social justice.
The BSP argued that during its four terms in office, several districts, tehsils, development blocks and administrative units were created to improve governance and public service delivery. Many of these districts were named after revered saints, social reformers and leaders representing Scheduled Castes and Other Backward Classes. The party alleged that these identities were later altered by the SP government due to narrow political considerations and caste-driven politics.
Taking its demand further, the BSP urged the Uttar Pradesh government to restore the original names of other districts, including Kanshi Ram Nagar, named after BSP founder Kanshi Ram, as well as districts named after other national icons. The party suggested that such a decision before or on Kanshi Ram’s death anniversary on October 9 would be viewed as a meaningful tribute.
The statement has reignited political debate across Uttar Pradesh. While the BSP’s appreciation of the BJP government’s decision has sparked discussions in political circles, there has been no official indication from either party regarding any future political understanding or alliance.
Political observers believe the controversy has once again brought identity politics, symbolism and the legacy of social icons to the forefront of Uttar Pradesh’s political discourse. Whether the state government extends the restoration exercise to other districts remains a question that could shape political narratives in the months ahead.
