Lucknow General Post Office marked Philately Day under National Postal Week with the release of a special cover and special cancellation commemorating renowned litterateur Dr. Shivmangal Singh ‘Suman’ and honouring the achievements of India’s gold medal-winning men’s and women’s hockey teams.

The event brought together the worlds of literature, sports and postal heritage, highlighting the role of philately in preserving memories of distinguished personalities and national achievements.

Distinguished Guests Attend the Event

The programme was attended by Ajay Singh Chauhan, Chief Postmaster General, Uttar Pradesh Circle, Lucknow, as the chief guest. Sunil Kumar Rai, Postmaster General, Headquarters Region, Lucknow, attended as the distinguished guest. Mohan Singh, son of the late Dr. Shivmangal Singh ‘Suman’, was also present as a special invitee.

Preserving Heritage Through Philately

Speakers appreciated Dr. ‘Suman’s’ literary contributions and the accomplishments of the Indian hockey teams. They observed that special postal covers and cancellations offer a way to preserve and recall the country’s cultural heritage, eminent personalities and sporting milestones.

Philately—the collection and study of postage stamps and related postal material—can serve as a bridge between history and the younger generation. Commemorative releases provide an opportunity to bring important cultural and sporting achievements into public memory.

Beyond a Ceremonial Release

The event underscored the importance of recognising achievements in both literature and sport. By dedicating a special cover and cancellation to these subjects, the postal department sought to encourage greater interest in philately while celebrating national accomplishments.

However, the wider impact of such initiatives will depend on sustained public engagement. Connecting philately with schools, colleges and youth organisations could help make stamp collecting more accessible and encourage young people to explore India’s history, literature and sporting legacy.

A commemorative release is an important symbolic gesture, but continued outreach and participation are essential to ensure that the tradition reaches beyond a single event. The Lucknow programme offered a reminder that postal heritage can remain relevant when it connects the achievements of the past with the curiosity of the next generation.
