Bureaucratic Delay Clouds Launch of UP’s First Government Unani Medical College

Controversy Erupts Over Alleged Plan to Divert Bareilly Unani College Building

A major controversy has erupted over the delayed inauguration of Uttar Pradesh’s first Government Unani Medical College built in Hajiyapur, Bareilly. Despite the completion of the modern campus nearly a year ago, the institution has reportedly failed to begin academic operations, triggering anger among Unani organisations and social groups.

Several organisations have accused officials in the state Unani department of negligence and administrative manipulation that allegedly prevented the college from becoming operational. Allegations have also been raised that senior officials misled authorities and failed to push the project forward, depriving the government of showcasing a major achievement in the AYUSH sector.

The issue intensified after reports surfaced that the newly constructed Unani Medical College building could be allotted to another educational institution instead of being used for Unani education. This move has drawn sharp criticism from stakeholders associated with the Unani medical system, who called the proposal unjust and against public interest.

In a memorandum addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Union AYUSH Ministry, and the Uttar Pradesh Government, organisations demanded that the college be started immediately in its original form. They argued that the institution was specifically designed for Unani medical education and changing its purpose would severely impact students, healthcare services, and the growth of traditional medicine in the region.

The memorandum also highlighted that Bareilly division currently lacks a government Unani medical college, making the institution critically important for aspiring students and patients seeking affordable alternative healthcare treatment.

Critics further questioned why a fully constructed government-funded institution remains non-functional despite repeated public demand and government commitments toward promoting AYUSH and traditional medicine systems.
