A high-impact medical symposium on pleural diseases held at Hotel Taj Mahal, Lucknow, brought critical attention to a largely overlooked yet increasingly significant cause of respiratory illness. The event gathered some of India’s most eminent pulmonologists and healthcare experts to discuss the alarming rise and complexity of pleural disorders.

Globally, pleural diseases are emerging as a major health concern, with an incidence ranging between 320 to 1300 cases per million population annually. In India, the burden is even more severe, as tuberculosis (TB) contributes to nearly 30–80% of pleural effusion cases. Alarmingly, about one-third of TB patients develop pleural complications, making it a pressing public health issue.

The symposium was inaugurated by Padma Shri awardee Dr. Rajendra Prasad, who emphasized that delayed diagnosis and inadequate management can lead to life-threatening complications such as empyema, trapped lung, and pleural thickening. Mortality rates in such cases can reach up to 20%, underlining the urgency of timely medical intervention.

Renowned experts including Dr. Suryakant Tripathi, Dr. Manoj K. Goel, Dr. Ashok Kumar Singh, Dr. Ankit Sharma, and Dr. Abhinav Guliani shared valuable insights during the sessions.

Discussions focused on real-world clinical challenges, including early and accurate diagnosis, evidence-based drainage techniques, and management of complex pleural conditions. Experts also highlighted advancements in interventional pulmonology that are transforming patient care and improving survival outcomes.

Organizers stated that the symposium aimed to enhance awareness among clinicians, standardize treatment protocols, and equip healthcare professionals with the latest evidence-based practices. This is particularly crucial for high-risk regions where TB and respiratory illnesses remain prevalent.

The event marked a significant step toward strengthening India’s response to respiratory diseases and improving overall patient care through knowledge sharing and innovation.
