The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decided to keep the policy repo rate unchanged at 5.25%, reaffirming its cautious yet balanced approach amid persistent global uncertainties, inflationary pressures, and geopolitical tensions. The decision was taken unanimously during the 62nd meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) held from August 3–5, 2026, under the chairmanship of RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra.

Inflation Under Close Surveillance

The RBI observed that headline CPI inflation rose to 4.4% in June 2026, primarily driven by food and fuel prices. However, the central bank emphasized that inflationary pressures have not become broad-based, while core inflation remains relatively moderate.

India’s Growth Momentum Intact

Despite global headwinds, the RBI retained its FY2026-27 GDP growth forecast at 6.7%, supported by strong domestic demand, resilient private consumption, expanding services, healthy credit growth, and sustained public infrastructure spending. India continues to remain among the world’s fastest-growing major economies.

Global Risks Continue

The policy statement highlighted several downside risks, including the El Niño weather pattern, uneven monsoon, geopolitical tensions in West Asia, volatile crude oil prices, and uncertainties in global trade policies. These factors could influence inflation and economic activity in the coming months.

Neutral Stance Signals Policy Flexibility

The MPC reiterated its neutral stance, allowing flexibility to respond to evolving macroeconomic conditions. It stressed that any future policy action would depend on incoming inflation and growth data rather than short-term volatility.
