In a major step toward strengthening India’s steel workforce, Steel Secretary Sandeep Poundrik inaugurated specialized skill development courses at the National Institute of Secondary Steel Technology (NISST) in Mandi Gobindgarh. The initiative aims to enhance employability among ITI students and workers in the secondary steel sector by equipping them with industry-relevant practical skills.
The program witnessed participation from senior officials of the Ministry of Steel, industry bodies, and representatives from the secondary steel sector, signaling strong support for the initiative. Addressing the gathering, Sandeep Poundrik highlighted India’s ambitious goal of increasing steel production capacity to 200–300 million tonnes by 2030, which is expected to generate significant employment opportunities.
He emphasized that for every 1 million tonne of steel production, approximately 1,500 to 2,000 workers are required, indicating a substantial future demand for skilled manpower. He stressed the importance of shifting focus from purely theoretical education to hands-on, industry-oriented training to bridge the skill gap.
The vision for NISST is to evolve into a national-level residential training hub catering to trainees from across the country, not just local regions. Industry stakeholders have also been encouraged to sponsor training programs for ITI students and existing workers, fostering a collaborative approach to workforce development.
Additionally, in a move toward sustainable industrial practices, four industrial units were awarded ‘Green Steel Certification’ for adopting environmentally responsible production methods, reinforcing India’s commitment to greener growth in the steel sector.
