Grid Stays Rock Solid Amid Heat Surge, Solar & Thermal Power Drive Record Supply

India Hits Historic Power Milestone: 256 GW Peak Demand Met Without Shortfall

(Anytime News Network – Pooja Srivastava)

In a landmark achievement for India’s power sector, the country successfully met its highest-ever electricity demand of 256.1 GW on April 25, 2026, at 3:38 PM—without any supply shortfall. This milestone surpasses the previous record of 250 GW recorded in May 2024 and the 245.4 GW peak observed in January 2026, marking a new era of energy resilience.

The surge in demand was largely driven by rising temperatures across the country, with electricity consumption in April 2026 (up to April 27) registering a significant 8.9% increase compared to the same period last year. Despite this spike, India not only fulfilled domestic demand seamlessly but also continued exporting power to neighboring nations, reinforcing its position as a reliable energy provider.

A key factor behind this success has been the addition of nearly 65 GW of new generation capacity during FY 2025-26, significantly strengthening the national power portfolio. Experts believe this robust expansion has positioned India to comfortably meet the projected peak demand of around 270 GW in the near future.

Efficient coordination led by the National Load Dispatch Centre (NLDC), along with regional and state-level dispatch centers, played a critical role in balancing supply and demand in real time. Strategic resource planning, optimal scheduling, and effective utilization of transmission corridors ensured uninterrupted power flow.

In terms of energy mix, thermal power dominated with a 66.9% share, while solar energy contributed an impressive 21.5%, highlighting India’s growing renewable capacity. Hydropower, nuclear, wind, and gas-based generation further supported grid stability. Notably, the grid frequency remained stable at 50 Hz, reflecting strong operational control.
