: The Ministry of Defence has signed contracts worth approximately ₹975 crore to procure trawl assemblies for T-72 and T-90 tanks, significantly enhancing the Indian Army’s mine-clearing capabilities.

The agreements were signed with BEML Limited and Electro Pneumatics and Hydraulics (India) Pvt Ltd in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.

Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation, the trawl assembly is a critical system mounted on tanks to neutralize landmines. It enables safe passage through minefields, including those with proximity magnetic fuses, thereby enhancing operational mobility and safety for military units.

Defence experts believe this capability will significantly strengthen battlefield readiness, allowing troops and armored vehicles to maneuver safely in high-risk zones.

The procurement falls under the “Buy (Indian-IDDM)” category, emphasizing indigenous design, development, and manufacturing. This aligns with the Atmanirbhar Bharat Initiative, aimed at boosting domestic defence production and reducing dependency on imports.

The project is also expected to generate substantial employment opportunities by involving MSMEs in component manufacturing, contributing to economic growth alongside strategic capability enhancement.

Overall, the deal marks a major step toward strengthening India’s defence infrastructure while promoting self-reliance and innovation.
