No More Long Drives for Fitness Checks—UP Empowers Local Transport Officials

In a significant relief for vehicle owners across Uttar Pradesh, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has issued fresh guidelines following a request from State Transport Minister Dayashankar Singh. The move allows vehicle fitness certification to be carried out within districts that currently lack Automated Testing Stations (ATS).
Under the revised framework, transport department officials in districts where ATS facilities are under construction or yet to be operational will now be authorized to conduct vehicle fitness inspections and issue certificates. Previously, vehicle owners had to travel to nearby districts with operational ATS facilities, often leading to inconvenience, additional costs, and delays.
At present, Uttar Pradesh has 31 operational ATS units spread across 26 districts, ensuring systematic and technology-driven vehicle fitness checks. Meanwhile, construction and installation of ATS facilities are underway in 40 additional districts, with the state government setting clear timelines for their completion.
Minister Dayashankar Singh emphasized that the government’s core objective is to ensure a safe, efficient, and transparent transport system. The new guidelines are expected to not only reduce the burden on vehicle owners but also enhance administrative efficiency and accessibility.
This progressive step reflects the state’s commitment to modernizing transport infrastructure while prioritizing citizen convenience. It is likely to streamline operations and significantly improve the overall vehicle fitness certification ecosystem across Uttar Pradesh.
