Marking World Bicycle Day with high energy and a powerful social message, a massive ‘World Bicycle Day Cyclothon’ was successfully organized in the state capital, Lucknow today. Spearheaded jointly by the ‘Consumer Guild, Lucknow’ and ‘Consumer VOICE’, the mega rally witnessed a spectacular turnout of fitness enthusiasts, environmentalists, and road safety advocates under the inspiring campaign banner “Join Link With Me.” Led prominently by Manoj and several key civil society members, the event transformed into a roaring public demonstration demanding immediate legislative protection for vulnerable road users.
Call for Action: Urgent Need for a Strong Road Safety Plan
The core objective of this June 3 Cyclothon extended far beyond promoting eco-friendly commuting; it aimed to corner policymakers regarding the rising fatalities among cyclists and pedestrians on Uttar Pradesh’s highways and urban roads.
Strict Speed Management: Organizers issued a resounding call for implementing scientifically backed speed management systems across high-risk zones in the city.
Vulnerable Road Users at Risk: The experts emphasized that without a dedicated, legally enforced ‘Strong Road Safety Action Plan,’ the lives of daily-wage workers and children who rely heavily on bicycles will remain in constant jeopardy.
Pedaling Towards Reform: “We need an infrastructure that respects the right to life of every person on the road, not just heavy motor vehicles,” noted Manoj and other coordinating activists during the post-rally session. The event concluded with participants signing a collective memorandum to be sent to transport authorities, cementing this year’s World Bicycle Day as a critical milestone for transport policy advocacy in Lucknow.
