India Reaffirms Commitment to Sustainable Mobility and Future-Ready Infrastructure

: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari called for deeper cooperation among BRICS nations to build sustainable, resilient, inclusive, and future-ready transport systems. Addressing the Third BRICS Transport Ministers’ Meeting under India’s presidency, he said innovation, partnership, and shared responsibility are essential to shaping the future of global mobility.
India Showcases Infrastructure Transformation
Gadkari highlighted that India now possesses the world’s second-largest road network, supported by access-controlled expressways and integrated multimodal connectivity. Flagship projects including the Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor, Sonamarg Tunnel, and over 10,000 km of greenfield expressways reflect India’s infrastructure transformation.
Rail, Maritime and Aviation Progress
The Minister underlined major achievements in railway electrification, the expansion of Vande Bharat trains, progress on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor, and the New Pamban Bridge. He also highlighted Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, Green Shipping initiatives, and digital platforms such as e-Navik and e-Samudra.
Focus on Green and Smart Mobility
Emphasising sustainable transport, Gadkari cited electric buses, the Green Urban Mobility Scheme, the UDAN regional connectivity programme, and the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan as key pillars of India’s mobility strategy. He also highlighted the use of recycled plastic, fly ash, steel slag, bamboo crash barriers, and waste materials in road construction.
Shared Vision for the Future
Calling for stronger BRICS collaboration, Gadkari urged member nations to work together on green hydrogen, electric mobility, digital transport systems, alternative fuels, and sustainable multimodal infrastructure through joint research, technology exchange, and capacity building. He expressed confidence that stronger BRICS cooperation would accelerate cleaner, safer, smarter, and more inclusive transport systems worldwide.
