Focus Shifts from Treatment Statistics to Patient Recovery, Research Quality and Institutional Accountability

Uttar Pradesh Governor and Chancellor Anandiben Patel delivered a strong message on healthcare accountability during the 30th Convocation Ceremony of Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI), urging medical institutions to move beyond reporting treatment statistics and instead measure the real impact of healthcare on patients’ lives.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor said that while performing 300 successful pediatric heart surgeries is a remarkable achievement, the true measure of success lies in how many of those children are now leading healthy and normal lives. She stressed that hospitals should regularly assess long-term treatment outcomes and the quality of medical research to ensure genuine improvements in patient care.
The convocation honoured 279 graduates with degrees and academic awards. The ceremony was attended by Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister Brajesh Pathak, SGPGI Director Dr. R.K. Dheeman, Dean Prof. Shalini Kumar, senior faculty members and distinguished guests.
Highlighting cancer care, the Governor noted that the Central Government has removed customs duty on nearly 70 life-saving cancer medicines. She said hospitals must now ensure that the reduced cost directly benefits patients and transparently report how many individuals have received affordable treatment.
She also revealed that SGPGI has submitted more than 100 research proposals to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), with evaluations expected during September and October. Emphasising inclusive healthcare, she urged authorities to ensure that every eligible family receives the benefits of the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme.
Governor Patel also expressed concern over infrastructure gaps within the institute, including hostel Wi-Fi, internet connectivity, library facilities and water leakage issues. She encouraged SGPGI to address these shortcomings and set a goal of becoming India’s premier medical institution within the next year.
Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak issued a clear directive to hospitals, stating that no patient should ever be turned away simply because of a “No Bed” situation. He said hospitals must provide emergency stabilisation and arrange timely referral to another healthcare facility whenever beds are unavailable, reaffirming that saving lives must remain the highest priority.
A major highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of the Governor’s Gold Medal to Prof. Narayan Prasad, Head of the Department of Nephrology, while several meritorious students received gold medals and academic honours.
SGPGI Director Dr. R.K. Dheeman announced that the institute’s advanced healthcare centre is progressing rapidly. From October, specialised paediatric services across 12 departments will become operational, alongside cutting-edge facilities including Proton Therapy, ECMO, Advanced Neuro-Intervention and next-generation Cancer Care.
The convocation concluded with a powerful message: the future of healthcare will be judged not by the number of surgeries performed, but by better patient outcomes, high-quality research, transparency and compassionate medical care.
