New Delhi: India’s rich cultural heritage is rapidly transforming into a powerful economic asset as Geographical Indication (GI) Tags strengthen the global identity of indigenous products while creating sustainable livelihoods for farmers, artisans, weavers and producer communities. According to the latest government data, India now has more than 800 registered GI products, with 607 registrations granted since 2014, reflecting the country’s remarkable progress in protecting and commercialising traditional assets.

Authenticity Creates Premium Value

A GI Tag certifies a product’s geographical origin, authenticity and unique craftsmanship, protecting it from imitation while enhancing consumer confidence. The Ministry of Textiles estimates that GI recognition can increase artisans’ incomes by 20–30 percent, enabling them to access premium domestic and international markets.

Uttar Pradesh Leads India’s GI Landscape

With 81 GI-tagged products, Uttar Pradesh tops the national rankings. Iconic products such as Banarasi Saree, Banaras Pink Meenakari, Kannauj Perfume and Muzaffarnagar Jaggery have emerged as global ambassadors of India’s craftsmanship. The successful export of GI-certified Muzaffarnagar jaggery to Bangladesh has demonstrated how geographical branding can significantly improve farmers’ earnings and international market access.

Government’s Multi-Pronged Strategy

The Government is strengthening the GI ecosystem through initiatives such as PM Ekta Mall, One Station One Product (OSOP), MSME Innovative Scheme, National Handloom Development Programme, APEDA Export Promotion, and tourism-based GI Trails. A major policy reform in 2025 reduced GI application fees by 80 percent while lowering renewal charges from ₹3,000 to ₹500, making registration more accessible for producer groups.

Towards 10,000 GI Registrations

India has set an ambitious target of 10,000 GI registrations by 2030, positioning GI products as strategic drivers of Atmanirbhar Bharat, Vocal for Local, rural prosperity and export-led growth. Experts believe the expanding GI ecosystem will significantly strengthen India’s global competitiveness while preserving centuries-old traditions for future generations.
