MoU Creates Structured Data-Sharing Framework

The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) and the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support the development and strengthening of the Statistical Business Register (SBR).
The agreement seeks to institutionalise a mechanism for sharing relevant data available with the MSME Ministry, particularly information generated through the Udyam Registration system. The initiative is aimed at creating a more structured, consistent and reliable foundation for economic statistics.
API-Based Data Exchange
A key component of the MoU is the sharing of unit-level Udyam Registration data through an API-based mechanism. The proposed two-way API will provide data for the development of the National Statistical Business Register (NSBR).
The agreement establishes the terms and understanding for sharing information related to the MSME Ministry’s Udyam Registration mechanism with MoSPI. The structured framework is expected to improve the coverage, consistency and reliability of business information used for statistical purposes.
Senior Officials Sign Agreement
The MoU was signed by Dr. Rajneesh, Additional Secretary and Development Commissioner, Ministry of MSME, and Dr. Dalip Singh, Additional Director General, MoSPI. Senior officials from both ministries were present during the signing.
What Is an SBR?
A Statistical Business Register is a central and regularly updated database containing details of statistical units engaged in economic activities within a defined geographical area.
It can include businesses, enterprises, establishments and other relevant economic units, along with their key characteristics and relationships with one another.
Building Stronger Economic Statistics
The SBR serves as fundamental infrastructure for an economic statistics system. It helps identify target populations for economic surveys, supports sample selection, enables the production of business demography statistics and provides a common framework for business-related information.
It can also facilitate greater integration and consistency across different data sources.
The latest agreement therefore seeks to connect MSME registration information with a broader national statistical framework, potentially strengthening the evidence base available for economic surveys and statistical analysis.
