BSP Chief Targets BJP and AAP, Calls for ‘Begumpura’ Ideals of Equality, Dignity and Justice

Bahujan Samaj Party chief and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has raised strong concerns over the demolition of a place of worship associated with Sant Guru Ravidas Ji at Tughlaqabad in Delhi. Referring to the August 10, 2019 incident, she said that members of the community who protested through democratic means faced lathi-charge, tear gas, arrests and legal cases.
‘Community Still Forced Into Temporary Shelter’
Mayawati alleged that the land associated with the Gurughar was also taken away and claimed that devotees are still being forced to offer prayers at a temporary tin structure. She described the situation as deeply painful for millions of followers and said that the episode remains firmly embedded in the collective memory of the community.
BJP Faces Political Charge
In her statement, Mayawati alleged that the BJP was now using the name of Sant Guru Ravidas Ji for a Kalash Yatra as Punjab elections approach. She accused the party of attempting to divert attention from the larger ideals associated with Guru Ravidas Ji, particularly the vision of Begumpura.
Dhaleta Incident Cited
The BSP chief also referred to an incident in Dhaleta village in Punjab, where she alleged that a wall of a Gurughar was demolished. According to her statement, members of the community and the BSP raised their voices over the issue, followed by arrests. She further claimed that the Aam Aadmi Party government eventually moved towards reconstruction of the Gurughar.
Warning Against Political Polarisation
Mayawati appealed to the community to remain alert to what she described as the politics of both the BJP and AAP. She stressed that Guru Ravidas Ji’s message goes beyond religious devotion and embodies dignity, equality, justice and social freedom.
Call for Respect March
She invited devotees to participate in the “End of Dependence and Resolve for Begumpura – Sant Guru Ravidas Ji Samman Yatra”, calling for the dignity of Gurughars and religious rights to be protected.
Mayawati said the ideals of Begumpura should be carried to every section of society and used as the foundation for strengthening a society based on equality, dignity and justice.
