India has launched a new youth-led initiative to strengthen its fight against tuberculosis, seeking to take TB prevention, early diagnosis, treatment and stigma reduction deeper into communities.

Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda launched the JOSH (Joint Squad for Health) Teams at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. The initiative aims to transform youth energy, outreach and community engagement into a stronger grassroots response against TB.

21% Decline

Nadda highlighted that India has recorded a 21 per cent decline in TB incidence, compared with a 12 per cent decline globally. He also said that India’s TB treatment coverage has risen to 92 per cent, significantly above the global figure of 78 per cent.

Yet the government has stressed that progress cannot become a reason for complacency.

Awareness Is Not Enough

The Health Minister underlined that the responsibility does not end with awareness campaigns or screening. Early identification, diagnosis, timely treatment and completion of treatment remain critical to breaking the chain of transmission.

This is where the JOSH Teams are expected to operate at the community level.

First Phase: 55 Districts

The initiative has been launched in its first phase across 55 districts in 11 States and Union Territories, with plans for expansion across the country.

Each JOSH Team will consist of five MY Bharat Volunteers and five NCC Cadets, led by a designated Class-I officer at the Block/Ward level.

Taking the Message Home

The teams will conduct household and community interactions, promote awareness of TB symptoms and prevention, encourage early testing and treatment, and work to counter myths, stigma and discrimination.

The broader objective is to reach people who may remain outside the formal healthcare system and connect them with timely care.

67,933 TB Mukt Panchayats

The government also recognised 67,933 Panchayats across 697 districts as TB Mukt in 2026. The achievement was attributed to the combined efforts of health workers, elected representatives, volunteers and local communities.

Technology Joins the Fight

India is also expanding the use of technology in TB detection and treatment. AI-supported portable X-ray systems and rapid molecular diagnostic technologies are being used to bring screening and diagnosis closer to communities.

New IEC material and digital tools were also launched. The ‘Khushi Avatar’ e-Sangini service will provide information on TB symptoms and treatment in 12 Indian languages, while a dedicated JOSH Teams feature has been added to the TB Mukt Bharat App.

The Last-Mile Test

The government’s latest initiative carries an ambitious message: TB elimination must become a people’s movement.

But the real test will be at the last mile—whether people with symptoms are identified early, whether treatment begins without delay, and whether patients remain supported until recovery.

For JOSH Teams, the challenge is clear: turn awareness into action and government programmes into a sustained community movement against TB.
