: India’s fight against telecom-enabled fraud is increasingly being powered by citizen participation. The Sanchar Saathi portal, developed by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), has crossed 30 crore visits since its launch in May 2023, highlighting growing public reliance on the platform for protection against telecom-related fraud.
Every Report Matters
Sanchar Saathi enables citizens to report suspicious calls, SMS and WhatsApp messages through its Chakshu facility. Fake KYC alerts, impersonation of government, police or bank officials, fraudulent investment and loan offers, and fake job communications can be reported through the platform.
The department has received 12.80 lakh inputs on suspected fraud communications, leading to action in 59.82 lakh cases, including the disconnection of more than 50 lakh mobile connections.
Lost Phones Tracked
The portal has also become an important tool for victims of handset theft and loss. So far, 60.96 lakh lost or stolen handsets have been blocked, 37.85 lakh traced, and more than 14 lakh recovered.
₹5,000 Crore Shield
Citizen-generated intelligence also contributes to the Financial Fraud Risk Indicator (FRI). According to DoT, FRI has helped prevent suspected cyber-fraud losses of more than ₹5,000 crore.
The intelligence is securely shared through the Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP) with banks, payment service providers, telecom operators and law-enforcement agencies. More than 1,600 stakeholders are connected to the platform, enabling coordinated action across the telecom, financial and law-enforcement ecosystem.
Know What Is Issued in Your Name
Citizens can check all mobile connections issued in their name and report those they did not obtain or no longer require. The platform also allows users to verify handset genuineness through IMEI, block stolen devices and report international calls disguised as Indian numbers.
Awareness Is the First Defence
The Sanchar Saathi mobile app has crossed 2.8 crore downloads and is available in English, Hindi and 21 regional languages, making telecom safety tools more accessible to citizens.
DoT has urged every mobile user to check the connections issued in their name and report suspicious communications.
For citizens who have already suffered cybercrime or financial loss, immediate reporting through 1930 or the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal remains essential.
The message is clear: a vigilant citizen is no longer merely a potential victim—he or she can become a Cyber Warrior capable of protecting many others.
