Lucknow witnessed an inspiring account of determination as retired Major A.K. Singh shared the extraordinary story of sailing around the world despite having lost his left leg. His remarkable journey stands as a powerful example of how determination can overcome seemingly overwhelming physical challenges.
15 Months at Sea
Major Singh completed nearly 50,000 kilometres of sea travel between 1985 and 1987, spending around 15 and a half months on the voyage. The expedition took him through challenging maritime routes, including the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea.
A Dream Born in 1978
Major Singh revealed that he had first planned his world voyage in 1978. At the time, however, financial constraints and a lack of equipment prevented him from pursuing the dream. His challenges became even greater after a hang-gliding accident resulted in the loss of his left leg.
But the accident did not end his ambition.
An Old Boat, A Bold Mission
To make the expedition possible, an old boat was purchased from England for approximately Rs 6.5 lakh. The vessel became the foundation of the ambitious voyage, which eventually began from Mumbai.
Storms Could Not Break the Spirit
Major Singh undertook the expedition with a six-member team. The journey involved difficult weather conditions and storms, but the team continued to move forward. Crossing thousands of kilometres of unpredictable waters, they turned an ambitious dream into reality.
A Story Shared in Lucknow
The Club of Lucknow organised “A Travelogue: Around the World Sailing in a Boat” at a hotel in Gomti Nagar on Saturday. Major Singh narrated his remarkable experiences and gave the audience an insight into the challenges, uncertainties and excitement of his historic voyage.
A Living Lesson in Determination
Club of Lucknow president Manoj Kumar Singh, former Chief Secretary Anup Chandra Pandey and retired Justice Vishnu Sahay were among those present at the programme.
Major Singh’s extraordinary journey delivered a powerful message: physical limitations may change the course of a journey, but they do not have to determine its destination.
