‘Survivor Alliance Meeting–2026’ calls for collective action on justice, rehabilitation and human rights

Survivors of human rights violations, torture, violence, discrimination and social exclusion came together at Pararkar Smriti Bhavan, Maidagin, Varanasi, for the ‘Survivor Alliance Meeting–2026’. Organised by the People’s Vigilance Committee on Human Rights (PVCHR) and Jan Mitra Nyas (JMN), with support from IRCT and UNVFVT, the meeting focused on “Survivors Leading Change: Rehabilitation, Dignity and Justice.”
Justice Beyond Legal Action
Speakers stressed that justice cannot be confined to legal proceedings alone. Shruti Nagvanshi said that justice must also encompass dignity, rehabilitation, social reintegration and freedom from discrimination.
Questions on Policing
Chief Guest Dr. Parmendra Singh, former Principal of Uday Pratap College, highlighted the importance of grassroots movements in a democracy. Senior journalist Vijay Vineet spoke about migration, livelihood challenges and alleged instances of police harassment faced by residents of the Ghasia settlement.
Dr. Lenin Raghuvanshi examined the historical evolution of the policing system and called for implementation of police commission recommendations. He also emphasised the need to address the difficult working conditions faced by police personnel.
Voices of Prisoners and Weavers
Prisoners’ rights activist Santosh Upadhyay, who came from Bihar, remembered the contributions and legacy of Anoop Chaudhary and Sushil Tripathi. Mohammad Idris of the Bankat Dastkar Adhikar Manch raised concerns of weavers and discussed the ongoing correspondence with the government over electricity tariffs.
“Human Dignity Above Identity”
Senior journalist Abhishek Srivastava, who chaired the programme, connected the gathering with the message of late human rights activist Anil Chaudhary — “Not identity, but human dignity.” Participants also remembered the social and human rights contributions of late Sushil Tripathi and pledged to carry forward his work and ideas.
Seven Honoured with Janmitra Award
Seven individuals were honoured with the ‘Janmitra Award–2026’ for their contributions to social causes, human rights and public welfare: Anand Prakash Nishad, Nitin Gupta, Rakesh Ranjan Tripathi, Rajendra Prasad, Pushpa Pal, Ashok Kumar Sinha and Iftikhar Ahmad.
Culture Becomes a Voice of Struggle
Students of the Baghwanala Raja Suheldev Janmitra Education Centre presented a street play on human rights and social awareness. The Ghasia tribal community from Sonbhadra presented Karma dance, expressing their concerns and lived experiences through cultural performance.
The meeting concluded with a collective commitment to strengthen efforts for justice, rehabilitation, dignity and a life free from discrimination for every survivor.
