Aizawl/New Delhi: Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, along with Mizoram Chief Minister Laldohoma, launched the ₹189.79 crore Mizoram Ginger Mission aimed at transforming the state’s ginger cultivation and value chain ecosystem.

The integrated initiative, led by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), brings together support from the Ministries of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Food Processing Industries, along with NABARD, ICAR, APEDA, and private sector stakeholders. The mission seeks to improve production, processing, branding, and export opportunities for Mizoram’s GI-certified ginger varieties.

Speaking at the launch event, Mr. Scindia said the initiative reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s holistic “farm to plate” vision, ensuring that farmers become active stakeholders across the agricultural value chain. He highlighted that Mizo ginger contains 6–8 percent oleoresin compared to the global average of around 3 percent, making it one of the finest pharma-grade ginger varieties in the world.

Despite its superior quality, farmers currently receive only ₹8–15 per kilogram, while international markets value the product at over ₹500 per kilogram. The Minister stressed the need to eliminate middlemen, strengthen cooperatives and Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), and ensure direct economic benefits to cultivators.

Under the mission, one integrated processing unit and three supporting centres will be established. More than 20,000 farmer families are expected to be integrated into a traceable and quality-assured value chain ecosystem focused on branding and export-oriented growth.

Chief Minister Laldohoma described the mission as a turning point for Mizoram’s agricultural economy. Industry partners also pledged full support in building Mizo ginger into a globally recognised premium brand.

The government aims to position Mizo ginger in Southeast Asian, Middle Eastern, and European markets under the broader “Brand North East” vision.
