Veteran Women’s Rights Activist Asha Mishra Passes Away at 78

Lucknow: Prominent women’s rights activist and former state president of the National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW), Asha Mishra, passed away on Friday morning in Lucknow. She was 78. Her demise has left political leaders, social activists, journalists, and members of civil society deeply saddened.

Asha Mishra was the mother of Hindustan Times Lucknow Resident Editor Pranshu Mishra. She is survived by her husband and two sons. A teacher by profession, she devoted decades of her life to social causes, especially the upliftment of women, the poor, and marginalised communities. Known for her fearless voice and progressive ideology, she remained actively associated with women’s movements and teachers’ unions throughout her life.

Leaders cutting across political lines paid tribute to the departed soul. Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak, Union Minister and BJP state president Pankaj Chaudhary, MLA Pankaj Singh, Congress leaders Virendra Madan and Anshu Awasthi, along with several prominent social personalities, visited to offer condolences.

Among those who paid their last respects were Indo American Chamber of Commerce representative Mukesh Bahadur Singh and Reena Singh, Lucknow District Magistrate Vishak G, former Lucknow University Vice Chancellor Prof Roop Rekha Verma, AIDWA leader Madhu Garg, IPTA member Rakesh, and social activists including Kanti Mishra, Naish Hasan, Deepak Kabir, Tahira Hasan and Seema Rana.

Condolence messages were also issued by UP Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, UP Congress president Ajay Rai, BJP organisational general secretary Dharampal Singh and Congress leader Avinash Pande.

Her last rites were performed at the Bhaisakund electric crematorium in the presence of senior journalists, intellectuals, retired officials and well-wishers who remembered her as a committed voice for justice and equality.
