LUCKNOW. Exposing the tall claims of safety and infrastructure development in Uttar Pradesh, two back-to-back tragic incidents have triggered massive political and public outrage. Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo and former Chief Minister Mayawati launched a scathing attack on the state administration via Twitter on May 29, 2026, demanding a high-level investigation into the gruesome Jewar murder and adequate compensation for the Hamirpur bridge disaster victims.

The first horrifying incident was reported from Greater Noida’s Jewar area, where a 15-year-old minor boy, Gopal Sharma, was brutally murdered. Gopal went missing on May 21, and his body was found stuffed inside an abandoned house in Rohi village on May 23. The victim’s family alleged extreme cruelty and mutilation of body parts, which has sparked massive local protests. While the police arrested three suspects (Naresh, Mohit, and Umesh) following a brief encounter, they attributed the motive to a petty dispute over smoking a hookah, terming the family’s mutilation claims as rumors. Mayawati has strongly demanded an independent, high-level probe to uncover the absolute truth behind the horrific crime.

Compounding the state’s woes, another major tragedy rooted in apparent poor construction quality struck Hamirpur district. In the early hours of May 29, a massive slab of an under-construction bridge over the Betwa River collapsed during heavy rain and storm. Six innocent laborers sleeping at the site were crushed to death under the debris, while three others sustained critical injuries. The incident has raised serious questions over corruption and a lack of safety oversight in state projects. Although Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced ₹5 lakh for the deceased’s families and ₹50,000 for the injured, the BSP chief stated that the aid is insufficient. She demanded that the government provide much better financial support and immediate criminal prosecution against the contractors and engineers involved.
