AI, Big Data and Intelligence Sharing Power a New Offensive Against Digital Crime

: In a decisive push to strengthen India’s cyber security architecture, the Government of India has intensified its technology-driven campaign against cyber fraud, fake telecom identities and financial scams. By leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data analytics and a nationwide Digital Intelligence ecosystem, authorities are rapidly identifying and disabling telecom resources exploited by cyber criminals.
Over 8.8 Million Suspicious Mobile Connections Disconnected
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has deployed its AI-powered ASTR analytics tool to detect suspicious mobile connections. As of July 15, 2026, more than 8.8 million mobile connections have been disconnected after failing mandatory re-verification, marking one of India’s largest telecom verification drives.
‘Chakshu’ Empowers Citizens
The Chakshu facility under the Sanchar Saathi platform has emerged as a powerful public participation mechanism against digital fraud. Instead of acting on isolated complaints, DoT performs large-scale data analytics on citizen reports to identify telecom misuse patterns. Based on 1.118 million reports submitted by users, authorities have disconnected 5.09 million mobile connections linked to suspected fraudulent activities.
Digital Intelligence Platform Strengthens Coordination
To curb the misuse of telecom resources in cybercrime and financial fraud, DoT has established the Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP) for two-way information sharing with key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Home Affairs’ Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C). The platform enables faster intelligence exchange and coordinated enforcement against organised cyber threats.
Financial Sector Joins the Security Network
The Digital Intelligence Platform is gaining strong institutional support. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has advised its regulated entities to onboard the platform for seamless intelligence sharing. Following awareness sessions conducted by DoT, more than 50 SEBI-regulated institutions have already joined the initiative, strengthening India’s financial cyber defence ecosystem.
Government Reaffirms Commitment
Replying to a written question in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani reiterated that while cybercrime investigations fall under the Ministry of Home Affairs and policing remains a State subject, the Central Government continues to build robust digital infrastructure and inter-agency coordination to protect citizens from evolving cyber threats and financial fraud.
