Samajwadi Party national president and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav has criticised the BJP over what he described as an objectionable remark allegedly directed at a revered Shankaracharya. Yadav said that using such language for a figure regarded as a symbol of faith by millions of Sanatan Hindus was deeply hurtful and reflected, in his view, an excessive sense of power.

Yadav said that people committed to Sanatan traditions and those who regard religious institutions with respect were deeply distressed by the alleged remark. He also claimed that people who had supported the BJP in the past were now feeling uncomfortable and embarrassed over the incident.
According to Yadav, the issue should not be viewed merely as a political exchange but as one involving the dignity and sentiments associated with a revered religious figure.

The SP chief said that society would raise its voice to protect its religious and social dignity. He also accused those in power of becoming carried away by the authority of office and said that the period of political arrogance would eventually come to an end.
