The night sky became a classroom for 23 promising students as the Indira Gandhi Planetarium, Lucknow, successfully concluded its Basic Astrophotography Workshop at Bappa Sri Narain Vocational P.G. College (KKV), Lucknow.

Held from September 25 to October 3, 2026, the workshop introduced students to the fundamentals of astrophotography, combining scientific observation, camera technology and creative imaging.

23 Students, One Sky

The participating students were introduced to the essential equipment used in astrophotography, camera techniques, selection of celestial objects and the basic processes involved in capturing astronomical images.

The training also focused on techniques used to improve the quality of celestial photographs and helped participants understand the technical discipline required to photograph objects across the night sky.

Science Behind the Lens

The workshop went beyond conventional photography. Students were encouraged to understand the scientific aspects of selecting celestial targets, operating equipment and producing better astronomical images.

The programme offered an opportunity to experience astrophotography as a meeting point of science, technology and creativity.

Experts Lead the Training

The workshop was conducted and coordinated by Saurabh Kumar, Utkarsh Mishra, Huzaifa Shakeel, Anurag Awasthi and Deepikha. Astrophotographers Utkarsh Mishra and Huzaifa Shakeel provided specialised exposure to various technical aspects of astronomical imaging.

From KKV, Dr. Shivani handled the coordination and organisational responsibilities associated with the workshop.

Scientific Temper Takes Centre Stage

Ramesh Chandra, Director of the Council of Science and Technology, Uttar Pradesh, said that basic astrophotography workshops can play an important role in developing students’ interest in astronomy and strengthening their scientific outlook.

He said such programmes could encourage emerging talent across the state and contribute to developing a new generation of astrophotographers.

The Next Stop

The Council is taking such programmes to educational institutions across the state to encourage greater interest in astronomy among students and young people.

The next Basic Astrophotography Workshop is scheduled to be organised at Sri J.N. P.G. College (KKC), Lucknow.

A New Window to the Universe

At the concluding session, students expressed their interest in pursuing astronomy and astrophotography further. For many participants, the workshop offered more than technical training—it opened a new window into the universe and demonstrated how technology can transform curiosity into scientific exploration.
