India has marked another significant milestone in biomedical innovation as the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) licensed three indigenous healthcare technologies to leading Indian pharmaceutical and vaccine manufacturers under its Medical Innovation Patent Mitra initiative. The move is aimed at transforming publicly funded scientific research into affordable healthcare solutions while strengthening India’s rapidly growing biomedical innovation ecosystem.
Among the technologies transferred is SHETA2, a first-of-its-kind therapeutic candidate designed to treat HPV-induced cervical pre-cancer and cervical cancer. Developed through collaboration between ICMR scientists and international researchers, the technology has been licensed to Emcure Pharmaceuticals Limited. The therapy selectively targets cancerous cells while sparing healthy tissue, offering the potential for a safer, less invasive, and more affordable treatment option.
ICMR has also transferred two next-generation vaccine technologies developed by the ICMR-National Institute for Research in Bacterial Infections (ICMR-NIRBI), Kolkata, to Biological E Limited. These include a promising next-generation typhoid vaccine candidate and a recombinant vaccine platform designed to provide broader protection against Salmonella Typhi, Salmonella Paratyphi, and Shigella infections, addressing major public health challenges.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Secretary, Department of Health Research and Director General, ICMR, said the organisation remains committed to ensuring that publicly funded research translates into products that improve health outcomes. Through initiatives such as Medical Innovation Patent Mitra and MedTech Mitra, ICMR is accelerating the journey from laboratory discovery to commercial deployment by strengthening collaboration between researchers, industry, and regulatory agencies.
Experts believe these technology transfers will significantly enhance India’s capabilities in cancer care, infectious disease prevention, indigenous vaccine development, and affordable healthcare innovation. The achievement further reinforces India’s vision of becoming a global leader in biomedical research while advancing the country’s goal of healthcare self-reliance through science, innovation, and strategic industry partnerships.
