Government Expands Network as Supply Chain and Accessibility Remain Under Scrutiny

India’s Jan Aushadhi programme has expanded to 20,149 operational outlets as of June 30, 2026, making affordable generic medicines more geographically accessible than ever before. Yet, the Government’s own measures suggest that ensuring uninterrupted medicine availability continues to be a major operational challenge.
Expansion Alone Doesn’t Guarantee Access
With 4,226 centres in Uttar Pradesh and 1,631 in Tamil Nadu, the network has grown significantly. However, authorities continue to monitor the 400 fastest-moving medicines, incentivise pharmacies to stock essential drugs and strengthen supply-chain management—indicating that maintaining consistent availability remains a critical priority.
Budget Utilisation Raises Questions
While budget allocations for the scheme have increased over the years, expenditure has not always matched allocations. In 2024-25, against a revised allocation of ₹284.50 crore, utilisation stood at ₹182.73 crore, raising questions about implementation efficiency and execution capacity.
Why So Many Grievance Channels?
The Government has established multiple complaint mechanisms, including CPGRAMS, a dedicated helpline and email support, allowing citizens to report medicine shortages. The existence and continued strengthening of these systems underscore the importance of addressing supply concerns at the ground level rather than merely expanding the network.
Quality Assured, Availability Still the Key Test
Officials maintain that medicines are sourced only from WHO-GMP-certified manufacturers and every batch undergoes laboratory testing before distribution. While quality assurance appears robust, patients ultimately judge the programme by whether essential medicines are available when needed.
The Real Challenge Lies Ahead
The Government now aims to expand the network to 25,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras by March 2027. Policy experts believe that future success will depend less on the number of stores opened and more on uninterrupted stock availability, efficient logistics, timely replenishment and improved patient confidence across the country.
