Integrated Emergency Stretcher Developed by Medanta Lucknow Doctors Receives Patent Registration from the Government of India

Demonstrating this spirit of innovation, Dr. Lokendra Gupta, Director of Emergency Medicine and Trauma Care at Medanta Hospital, Lucknow, and National President of SACTEM, along with his expert team, has achieved a remarkable milestone. The design of the ‘Integrated Emergency Transport Stretcher’ developed by their team has been granted formal registration by the Patent Office, Government of India.
A Critical Incident That Sparked a Question
The journey of this innovation began with a real-life patient crisis. While a critically ill patient was being shifted from the emergency department to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), their condition suddenly deteriorated, necessitating immediate Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). At that moment, a practical bottleneck faced by emergency physicians surfaced: performing effective CPR on a moving conventional stretcher is extremely difficult, as doctors lack adequate space and a stable foundation to deliver effective chest compressions.
This led to a simple yet revolutionary question: “Why must a doctor have to climb onto a stretcher just to perform CPR?” That single thought planted the seed of an innovation that has now translated from a conceptual design into a legally recognized patent backed by the Government of India.
A Single Stretcher Serving Multiple Roles
This innovative stretcher has been engineered with the core philosophy that transporting a critically ill patient should never become an obstruction to their treatment. A single stretcher can be seamlessly adapted across various clinical environments:
Intensive Care Unit (ICU) settings
Emergency treatment and CPR delivery
Diagnostic and Radiology procedures
Surgical and procedural workflows
Seating and semi-reclined positioning
Safe patient transport and transfer
This advanced stretcher integrates an extended platform for CPR, continuous patient monitoring, oxygen and suction provisions, emergency supply storage, patient safety harnesses, radiolucent surfaces for imaging, intravenous fluid stands, height adjustability, and backup power integration onto a unified platform.
A Solution Born From Daily Clinical Challenges
The defining strength of this innovation is that it was conceived by physicians who deal with life-and-death trauma cases on the frontline every single day. The multidisciplinary team included Dr. Nayan Sriramula (HOD, Emergency Medicine, Medicerv Hospital, Hyderabad), Dr. Utsav Anand Mani, Dr. Radhika Rani Chandra, Dr. Yatin Talwar, Dr. O.P.
