In a major boost to India’s clean energy and sustainable transport mission, the Department of Science and Technology’s Technology Development Board (TDB) has signed an agreement with Delhi-based NTF Energy Solutions Pvt. Ltd. to support the commercialization of indigenous Type-IV composite CNG cylinders.

The project aims to establish an advanced manufacturing facility equipped with state-of-the-art filament winding, blow molding, and high-pressure testing technologies. Officials believe the initiative will significantly strengthen India’s domestic capabilities in advanced gas storage systems and accelerate the country’s transition toward cleaner transportation solutions.

Type-IV composite cylinders are considered the next-generation alternative to conventional steel cylinders. These cylinders are nearly 75 percent lighter, improving fuel efficiency and helping reduce carbon emissions. The cylinders are designed with corrosion-resistant polymer liners, optimized CFRP layouts, and advanced mechanical locking systems to ensure maximum safety, durability, and leak resistance.

The innovative design can withstand burst pressures exceeding 600 bar, far above regulatory safety requirements. Experts say this development could transform India’s rapidly growing CNG mobility ecosystem and reduce dependence on imported technologies.

TDB Secretary Rajesh Kumar Pathak stated that the commercialization of advanced composite cylinders is crucial for strengthening India’s clean transportation infrastructure and achieving technological self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Naveen Jain and Naman Jain expressed gratitude for the government’s support and said the project would accelerate the deployment of lightweight, efficient, and safer mobility solutions across India.
